Harambee A Cappella presents
TOP OF THE POPS
ONLINE PROGRAMME
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
Harambee A Cappella would like to acknowledge the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung People as the Traditional Custodians of this land on which TOP OF THE POPS is taking place today. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, who have cultivated a rich history spanning tens of thousands of years, full of storytelling and art with ceremonies of music, dance, and celebration. This was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.
DIRECTOR’s welcome
Welcome to Harambee A Cappella’s end-of-year showcase, set in the aptly-named Champions Hall, given the group’s recently-earned international title “Category Winner of the Pop Ensemble Open Division” at the 2024 World Choir Games held in New Zealand. Tonight’s concert sets out to live up to this reputation and prove that we are indeed worthy winners as the TOP OF THE POPS, with repertoire consisting of members’ top pop tracks, songs sung competitively for adjudicators, and some of the latest chart-toppers mixed in with some timeless earworms.
The last “Favourites”-style concert was held in November of 2018, mere months before I would join the ensemble’s Creative Team. In the seven years since then, we have tackled an absolute smorgasbord of tunes and, tonight, it seems like the right amount of time has passed to revisit some of our favourite arrangements of yesteryear with you. For long-time fans of the group, I hope you enjoy taking this walk down memory lane with us, whilst equally enjoying the newer hits we’ve been hiding up our sleeve!
Please note the following:
Please ensure all of your devices are on ‘silent’ during tonight’s concert.
We ask that all audience members refrain from recording tonight; please leave that up to the professionals.
There will be a 10-minute interval, followed by a raffle draw at the start of Act 2.
In the event of an emergency, please follow the illuminated exit signs.
A special thank you to: my Assistant Musical Director, Isaac Stott, for his extensive musical knowledge, stalwart leadership, and ongoing support and collaboration; the entire committee for their tireless work behind the scenes, organising our many performances and super exciting secret projects for next year (you’ll just have to wait and see!); and all of the Harambabes, for their trust and dedication in my creative vision over the years.
Now, please sit back and relax, as you enjoy the TOP OF THE POPS, with Harambee’s signature flair!

Walking on Sunshine
Katrina and the Waves
Words and Music by Kimberley Rew
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: New arrangement!
Bass Mic: Ricardo Mariano
Vocal Percussionist: Brian Chapman
The eponymous track of Katrina and the Waves' 1983 debut album is undeniably their most popular song and for good reason too; its exuberant energy exudes elation with every lyrical line. These vibrant vibes have elicited many a cover of Walking on Sunshine, by artists such as country legend Dolly Parton and indie-pop-funk husband-and-wife duo Pomplamoose, not to mention popping up in numerous popular media, including movies ranging from American Psycho to Bean, and even popping up in the television show Glee. Royalties for the song have earned the band over ten million dollars in its lifetime, and advertisers have been known to pay up to $200,000 for its use in commercials. With infectious upbeat charm, we know you won’t be able to resist grooving along to this arrangement of this feel-good number, peppered with musical references throughout!
Africa
Toto
Words and Music by Jeff Porcaro and David Paich
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: 2020 (RESOLVE: Online Showcase)
Bass Mic: Jarek Głowacki, Daniel Kim
Vocal Percussionist: Ricardo Mariano
Considered a cultural touchstone by many, this 80s rock anthem has maintained critical acclaim over the decades since its release, whether due to its irresistibly singable hook or its inherent internet memeability. The song was repopularised this year, due to Australian conductor Astrid Jorgensen’s appearance on America’s Got Talent, where she flexed her skills as the creator of the “Pub Choir” by rallying the entire audience into spontaneously singing Africa in multi-part harmony! In the same vein, for this song (and only this song!) feel free to sing along with us and bask in the vibrations of live group singing!
Can’t Help Falling In Love
as performed by Pentatonix
Words and Music by George David Weiss, Hugo Peretti and Luigi Creatore
Arranged by Ben Bram, Pentatonix, and Jonathan Miller
Last Performed: 2022 (LEGACY)
Soloists: Rianna Bina, Ezri Chow, Teleri Holton, Rhianna Kett, Vanessa Rivera, Kim Singline, Gen Underhill, Stephanie Wagstaff
Bass Mic: Jarek Głowacki
Pentatonix’s win on the 3rd season of NBC’s The Sing Off heralded a new era of contemporary a cappella as this five-part pop vocal band revolutionised the vocal harmony scene. Their meteoric popularity inspired many members of Harambee, so it is no wonder that one of their arrangements has wound up on the group’s list of favourites. Please enjoy our rendition of Pentatonix’s incredibly delicate and beautiful arrangement of this timeless classic from Elvis Presley.
Bad Day
Daniel Powter
Words and Music by Daniel Powter
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: 2023 (INTO THE VOID)
Vocal Percussion: Daniel Kim
Written in 2002, Daniel Powter’s biggest hit was oddly first used in a French Coca-Cola television advertisement before finally being released in 2005 as the lead single on his self-titled second studio album, before going on to be covered by the fictional music group “Alvin and the Chipmunks” in their 2017 film bearing the same name. Bad Day utilises the second-person point of view for the majority of the song to outline the listener’s thoughts and actions during such an eponymous period. Whilst the closing lyric implies that these recurring bad days will happen “one more time”, this mid-noughties hit highlights the transient nature of these melancholy moments, and encourages us to acknowledge the present and to look towards a brighter future.
Down Under
Men at Work
Words and Music by Colin Hay and Ron Strykert
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: 2024 (Growing Up In Australia)
Soloist: Lily Kelly
Bass Mic: Daniel Kim
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
Released in 1981 by Australian rock band, Men at Work, Down Under continues to be a favourite tune of many Australians today, even being ranked #2 of Triple M’s “Ozzest 100”, the ‘most Australian’ songs of all time in 2018 (#1 was Cold Chisel’s Khe Sanh). In 2009, the song’s famous flute solo which sampled the melody of the children’s song Kookaburra became a point of controversy when the publisher of Kookaburra, Larrikin Music, decided to sue Men at Work for copyright infringement, and ultimately won, with Larrikin earning 5% of royalties from 2002; this entire legal debacle did not go down well with the Australian public. The lyrics portray the protagonist of the song meeting people from other places and these people recognise that the protagonist is from Australia, “a land down under”, with a man from Brussels even offering a Vegemite sandwich. Drawing inspiration from Tones & I’s darker cover of this classic Aussie anthem, this arrangement seeks to emphasise the protagonist’s chagrin; would we be proud to be recognised as an Australian? If not, what would have to change? This powerful message, coupled with the power of the ensemble’s vocals, has made this an instant Harambee favourite, and we hope this version of Down Under sticks with you as well, with member Lily Kelly’s solo debut.
still feel
half•alive
Words and Music by Emiko Rochelle, Rachel Kramer, James Krausse, J. Tyler Johnson, Brett Kramer and Josh Taylor
Arranged by Charlotte Roberts
Last Performed: 2021 (EMBRACE)
Bass Mic: Ricardo Mariano
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
still feel is the breakout single from indie-pop band half•alive, which uses space imagery and metaphors to describe the search for hope amidst waves of hopelessness, starkly contrasted by a backdrop of upbeat funky energy that ultimately drives home a message that it is always worth fighting for life, no matter how ungrounded one may feel in the moment. This arrangement, from alumna and 2021 AMD Charlotte Roberts, was and remains beloved by the group and has been a staple arrangement in the group’s repertoire ever since.
And So It Goes
Billy Joel
Words and Music by Billy Joel
Arranged by Kirby Shaw
Last Performed: 2023 (INTO THE VOID)
Bass Mic: Wei Hong
One of the most successful singer-songwriters of the late 20th century, New York icon, Billy Joel, penned And So It Goes in 1983, although it would not be released until six years later. Written in iambic tetrameter, these delicate lyrics describe a doomed relationship on the verge of breaking-up. Shaw’s simple and sublime interpretation allows the song’s sentiments to shine and for listeners to share in the sadness of this story. No doubt, its bittersweet hopeful message of longing is the reason why it was also voted as one of the group’s favourite songs to sing and we hope you enjoy tonight’s rendition as much as we do.
Zombie
The Cranberries
Words and Music by Dolores O’Riordan
Arranged by Daniel Kim and Ricardo Mariano, based on an arrangement by Jane Patterson
Last Performed: 2022 (LEGACY)
Soloists: Steph Bumpstead, Rhianna Kett
Bass Mic: Jayson Paul
Released in 1994, Zombie is a protest song by Irish alternative rock song, written by The Cranberries’ lead singer Dolores O’Riordan in memory of Johnathan Ball, 3, and Tim Parry, 12, two young children who were killed in the 1993 Warrington bombings. The namesake of Harambee A Cappella’s first ever pop a cappella album, the chorus of this song poses an interesting thought: who is the zombie? Is it the perpetrator of war, a mindless killing machine? Is it the soldier who blindly follows orders? Is it the dying civilian with thoughts no longer to be had? Is it the survivors of the war, shell-shocked and blank? This arrangement is inspired by Harambee’s studio arrangement, connecting further to the lyrics and adding in more moments of vulnerability and anguish, a track that members return to as one of their favourites to perform.
Pure Imagination
as performed by the SoCal VoCals
Words and Music by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley
Arranged by Ben Bram and Tehillah Alphonso
Last Performed: 2022 (LEGACY)
Soloist: Elizabeth Bartetzko
Bass Mic: Patrick Jahns
Vocal Percussion: Ricardo Mariano
Another Harambee favourite, this stunning reharmonisation of this classic tune perfectly encapsulates the magic and the wonder of dreaming, wishing, imagining. As the lyrics suggest, the onus is on the individual to realise their dreams and turn them into reality, with the addition of new lyrics, “Wanna change the world? There’s work to be done.” The group’s recent win at the 2024 World Choir Games was once but a mere dream and, with an international title under our belt, Harambee A Cappella is dreaming even bigger to more exciting projects in 2026! Stay tuned for more, but for now, sit back and enjoy the lush and complex harmonies, as performed by the only a cappella group to win five titles at the ICCA (the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella), the SoCal VoCals.
Unwritten
Natasha Bedingfield
Words and Music by Natasha Bedingfield, Danielle Brisebois and Wayne Rodrigues
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: 2021 (EMBRACE)
Bass Mic: Daniel Kim
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
This next HaramFave by Natasha Bedingfield has had waves of success, firmly cementing its place in pop culture history. From its initial release in 2004, a 2015 rendition of this song by Sean Kickham, belted out of a red car in a Chick-fil-A carpark, went viral on Vine, with the song’s popularity boosting again recently due to its inclusion in the 2023 romcom Anyone But You as Ben’s “serenity song”. It’s been used in countless other TV shows and movies over the years, and performed at many graduation ceremonies, particularly due to its universally uplifting lyrics that Bedingfield actually penned as a motivational message for her brother’s 14th birthday. This arrangement plays off the original melody’s interplay between minor and major qualities by starting off mysteriously, through the use of the melodic minor scale, and resolving into a much more familiar upbeat major ending, which we hope inspires you to achieve your goals as you remember that, wherever you are in life right now, “the rest is still unwritten”.
Never Gonna Give You Up
Rick Astley
Words and Music by Mike Stock, Matthew Aitken, and Peter Waterman
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: 2025 New Arrangement!
Soloist: Charlotte Crawford-Shires
Bass Mic: Ricardo Mariano
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
Rick Astley’s signature song from 1987 has withstood the test of time as one of the most well-known worldwide hits, with Billboard magazine ranking Never Gonna Give You Up in 2023 as one of the top 500 pop songs of all time. Part of its longevity is due to the 2007 bait-and-switch internet meme known as “Rickrolling” whereby people will click on a disguised hyperlink, expecting something else, only to be unwittingly transported to the music video of Astley’s infamous track. We couldn't help but achieve something similar in this arrangement by implying that we were going to sing Seasons of Love from RENT and then pivoting to the actual song. The lyrics actually hold a rather beautiful sentiment and we hope the opening balladic interpretation helps you see the song in a new light and not just as a gimmicky one-hit wonder.
Grenade
Bruno Mars
Words and Music by Andrew Wyatt, Bruno Mars, Brody Brown, Ari Levine, Philip Lawrence, and Claude Kelly
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: 2020 (RESOLVE: Online Showcase)
Bass Mic: Wei Hong
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
Grenade was Bruno Mars’ third number one single on the Billboard Hot 100, with this 2010 power pop ballad serving as the medium to describe the protagonist’s heartbreak stemming from unrequited love. The lyrics in the chorus describe the extreme lengths to which the protagonist would go to show their fierce passion, the hyperbole reminiscent of the dangerous situations that fictional intelligence officers frequently find themselves in. It was this hyperbole that inspired this arrangement, capturing an increasingly frenetic relationship between a forlorn high-profile spy and a dangerously alluring femme fatale, with some familiar musical motifs and references that you may recognise. Despite being arranged during the Melbourne COVID lockdown of 2020, this is the first time that it is being performed live on a concert stage. We hope you enjoy this colourful reinterpretation of the song, in a three-part saga of genres, spanning jazz, pseudo-polka, and pop.
Chappell Roan Medley: Pink Pony Club / Good Luck, Babe! / HOT TO GO!
Chappell Roan
Words and Music by Kayleigh Rose Amstutz and Daniel Nigro / Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, Daniel Nigro, and Justin Tranter / Kayleigh Rose Amstutz and Daniel Nigro
Arranged by Stephanie Bumpstead
Last Performed: Debut performance!
Soloists: Georgia Harris, Emilija Olsen, Stephanie Wagstaff
Bass Mic: Emma Love, Zoe Ness
Whilst Chappell Roan has become a relatively recent household name, this American singer-songwriter had been diligently working for many years prior to her meteoric rise to fame last year. Her single Good Luck, Babe! off of her 2023 debut studio album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”, was the catalyst for her global stardom, reaching number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, with other singles Hot to Go! and Pink Pony Club swiftly joining the charts with stellar success. This dance-pop trio of the Midwestern pop princess’ tracks has been mashed up by Harambee arranger Stephanie Bumpstead into a delightful musical journey, and we encourage you to dance with us during the final number!
You'll Be In My Heart
Phil Collins
Words and Music by Phil Collins
Arranged by Niko Tutland
Last Performed: Debut performance!
Bass Mic: Ricardo Mariano
Phil Collins’ contribution to the 1999 Disney animated film Tarzan was rightfully recognised, winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song, and it has since seen waves of popularity, particularly with the latest production of the Broadway musical of the same name reaching Australian shores. This tender a cappella arrangement of You'll Be In My Heart serves to highlight the sweet and reassuring lyrics, telling listeners that they will always have someone in their corner, no matter how different we may be or whatever anyone else says.
golden hour
JVKE
Words and Music by Zachary Lawson and Jake Lawson
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: Debut performance!
Soloist: Steven Pythas
Bass Mic: Ricardo Mariano
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
A Rhode Island resident, Jacob Dodge Lawson, known as JVKE, rose to prominence during the COVID-19 lockdowns, where he began to create TikToks for his songs. Golden Hour, a single from his 2022 debut album This is What ___ Feels Like (Vol. 1–4), peaked at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. This arrangement of his slow-burning serenade took two years to finally reach completion but, with all of its shimmery arpeggiated textures, extended chords, and surprising modulation, we hope it was worth the wait! This is also Harambee member Steven’s solo debut.
All I Need
Jacob Collier (with Mahalia and Ty Dolla $ign)
Words and Music by Michael Peha, Jacob Collier, and Ty Dolla $ign
Arranged by Elliott von Wendt for The Nor’easters
Last Performed: 2025 New arrangement!
Soloists: Isaac Stott, Zoe Ness
Bass Mic: Patrick Jahns
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
Multi-Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, Jacob Collier is renowned as an artistic prodigy and one of the brightest musical minds of the 21st century; you have probably seen a viral video or two of him tapping out polyrhythms, or perhaps heard his collaborations with other artists, such as his cover of Bridge over Troubled Water with John Legend and Tori Kelly which he won the 2025 Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella. All I Need is the third track off of his album Djesse Vol. 3 and was nominated for Best R&B Performance at the 2021 Grammy Awards. This beast of an arrangement, originally performed for The Nor’easters, boasts a 15-part vocal split, and was presented by Harambee at the Boroondara Eisteddfod this year, earning them the win. Listen out for the modulation to Bb half sharp, as you listen to the sultry tones of our soloists Isaac Stott, and new 2025 member Zoe Ness who is making their solo debut!
Beautiful Things
Benson Boone
Words and Music by Benson Boone, Jackson Lafrantz Larsen, and Evan Blair
Arranged by Jarek Głowacki
Last Performed: Debut performance!
Soloists: Jack Liao, Alex Liao
Bass Mic: Patrick Jahns
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
Benson Boone is an American singer-songwriter who briefly appeared on American Idol in 2021 and then used TikTok to gain popularity to get signed. Many people will know of his 2024 release Beautiful Things due to his rendition of this song at the 2025 Grammy Awards where he flipped off of a grand piano in a sparkly pale-blue jumpsuit. This version of the heart-stopper’s chart-topper is Harambee member Jarek Głowacki’s debut contemporary a cappella arrangement, as a deliverable from the new Arranging Workshop initiative realised by the creative team and the committee this year. Additionally, the twins Jack and Alex Liao, whose Harambee membership spans 14 years each, get to shine in the spotlight tonight.
Die With A Smile
Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga
Words and Music by Peter Gene Hernandez, Stefani Germanotta, Dernst Emile, James Fauntleroy, and Andrew Wotman (Andrew Watt)
Arranged by Ricardo Mariano
Last Performed: Debut performance!
Soloists: Sam, Lauren Russo
Bass Mic: Wei Hong
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
This pop-soul number from pop powerhouses Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga describes the powerful bond of a couple and their deep longing for each other, despite uncertain and apocalyptic circumstances. With two incredible artists at the helm, it is no wonder that this soft rock serenade became the fastest song to reach one, two, and three billion streams on Spotify. Arranged by longtime Harambee arranger Ricardo, this particular rendition also features Harambee members Sam and Lauren in both of their solo debuts. With tight clustered chords housing tense intervals, and vocals that contrast from soft doo-wop to melancholy cries, we hope this chart-topper makes you appreciate the loved ones in your life, with a smile.
Please Please Please
Sabrina Carpenter
Words and Music by Sabrina Carpenter, Jack Antonoff, and Amy Allen
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: Debut performance!
Cheeky popstar Sabrina Carpenter has been having a tsunami of success with hit single after hit single scaling the charts. Her first single to chart in the number one position, Please Please Please sees a protagonist confess their fears that their bad-boy reputation boyfriend may destroy their relationship and pride. This arrangement maintains a lot of the whimsy and fun aspects from the original song whilst also incorporating revised lyrics from Sabrina Carpenter’s duet with Dolly Parton, just to keep things family friendly!
Dance Monkey
Tones And I
Words and Music by Toni Watson
Arranged by Daniel Kim
Last Performed: 2024 (Growing Up In Australia)
Bass Mic: Jarek Głowacki
Vocal Percussionist: Dennis Wang
The second single released by the now globally-renowned and multi-award-winning Australian singer-songwriter, Dance Monkey summarises Watson’s busking experience of fiercely fighting for the listeners’ attention in an age of instant entertainment on social platforms; either the crowd asks for more, or they just leave. In tonight’s performance, these lyrics have been reframed to paint a picture of an individual being “othered”, despite following the instructions to “dance” in order to fit in. These demeaning demands, and reclamation of their power, have been captured in this jazzy arrangement that ends by repeating the chorus to the audience, eliciting their reflection on who it is that they relate to more in this scenario. This arrangement, devised in collaboration with the then Assistant Musical Directors, Ricardo Mariano and Stephanie Bumpstead, was also featured in Harambee’s 2024 World Choir Games winning set.
Brave
Sara Bareilles
Words and Music by Jack Antonoff and Sara Bareilles
Arranged by Scott Shattuck
Last Performed: RISE (2019)
Soloist: Teleri Holton
Bass Mic: Wei Hong
Vocal Percussionist: Brian Chapman
Sara Bareilles’ anthem Brave was written in 2013, inspired by a friend's coming out process, providing a message of courage and allyship. Brave reached number three on Australian charts, and was Bareilles’ third top-40 hit in the United States, at number 23. In a cheeky nod to the accusations of plagiarism of Katy Perry’s Roar, Shattuck’s arrangement sneaks in a reference to this song, in the Baritone line. We hope that this chart-topper emboldens you to live authentically and to chase your joy.
September
Earth, Wind and Fire
Words and Music by Allee Willis and Maurice White
Arranged by Deke Sharon
Last Performed: 2025 New Arrangement!
Bass Mic: Ricardo Mariano
Pardon us for singing this disco banger a few months late, although Harambee actually did get the opportunity to serendipitously sing this song on the 21st of September earlier this year! September was very successful commercially and reached No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart and its incredibly fun hook has had humans and parrots singing it alike for decades! Its popularity has seen the song be covered, sampled, and remixed innumerable times, and tonight we perform an arrangement of it by the godfather of contemporary a cappella himself, Deke Sharon.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours)
Stevie Wonder
Words and Music by Stevie Wonder, Syreeta Wright, Lee Garrett and Lula Mae Hardaway
Arranged by Deke Sharon
Last Performed: 2022 (LEGACY)
Bass Mic: Jayson Paul
Stevie Wonder’s funky 1970 tune spent six weeks at number one on the US R&B chart and peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. This blazing arrangement by Deke Sharon features some crazy (but cool!) counterpoint, with a toe-tapping feel-good vibe. Feel free to groove along to this delightful ditty, our final chart-topper acting as our cheery concert-stopper!
